CAL POLY -- Two local college campuses have earned national nods for catching a wave.

Surfline.com recently released its list of the Top Ten Surfing Campuses across the United States.

U.C. Santa Barbara claimed the fourth spot. Cal Poly is a bit higher at number three.

According to the website, Cal Poly is in the center of popular surf spots like Pismo Beach and Morro Bay. The university also offers a surfboard shaping class each quarter that is very unique.

"I think there's an allure, kind of a romance attached to shaping your own surfboard," said Darren Conner, Assistant Director of Programs for Cal Poly.

It takes a beginner about 12 hours to shape a board from scratch.

The surfboard shaping classes are held in the Cal Poly Craft Center.
