PISMO BEACH -- More than a dozen injured war veterans are finding comfort from their pain by catching waves in Pismo Beach.
It is a program called Operation Restoration.
Many of the servicemen and women are amputees who were injured in war, but they are not letting their disabilities keep them down.
"You can't let life push you around," said Staff Sgt. Tim Norton. "It's a roller coaster ride, you're going to have your ups and downs and you fight through it."
Staff Sgt. Tim Norton lost his leg after he was shot by Iraqi insurgents in May of 2008. Norton is undergoing therapy at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. For the next several days, he is in Pismo Beach, experiencing the healing power of surfing.
The program is put on by the Association of Amputee Surfers.
With every ride, the disabled surfers are gaining new strength and courage.
Professional and local surfers make the program possible by volunteering their time.
Operation Restoration IV runs until next Thursday. In addition to surfing, the participants will also be golfing, kayaking and canoeing.
