SANTA BARBARA - As the eco-movement gains momentum, many faith based organizations are getting onboard. One local church is leading by example, and making it easier for others to follow suit. Members of the Unitarian Society in Santa Barbara, have teamed up with the Fund of Santa Barbara, to create the "Clean/Green energy fund. The money will go toward energy saving projects for local non-profit organizations.
"It's really about walking your talk on environmental work," says Geoff Green, the executive director of the Fund of Santa Barbara.
While members of the Unitarian Society hope the fund will push other churches to begin their own eco-projects, the fund isn't only available to religious groups.
"In the for-profit and private sector, there are tax incentives there are other sorts of incentives that people can access, to give them a reason and make it more feasable for them to go green. In the case of non-profits...that's what this is supposed to be, a pool of resources for non-profit organizations, religious or otherwise," explains Green.
The clean/Green energy fund is still in the fundraising phase. Organizers expect the first grant to go out later this year or early next year.
