Governor Statement on Buellton CHP Officer Death

SACRAMENTO - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement regarding the death of California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Jarrod Martinez of Buellton:

"Maria and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jarrod Martinez, who worked daily to protect his community. The Santa Barbara area is a better place because of his tireless service and we will never forget his dedication to public safety. On behalf of all Californians, we send our thoughts and prayers to Jarrod's family, friends and fellow officers."

Martinez, 30, died on October 29 after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle while he was on-duty. He graduated from the CHP Academy on October 31, 2008. Martinez is survived by his wife Trish and daughter Julia.

In honor of Officer Martinez, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

Officer Martinez was killed in a vehicle accident Thursday where he was thrown from his motorcycle.
