SANTA BARBARA - A statue of Ronald Reagan could soon stand in the State Capitol building, if California Senator Tony Strickland has his way. Strickland chose President's Day to introduce the bill which would honor the 40th president, and former Governor of California.
"We should all be proud of him as Californians, and I think its long overdue that we have a capitol statue of Ronald Reagan at our capitol."
Andrew Coffin, Director of the Reagan Ranch adds, "It's an occasion for our state and for the country to remember not only what he accomplished but what he stood for."
Strickland came up with the idea while walking around the State Capitol grounds with his kids. He believes a memorial of the late president would spark conversation and serve as a reminder of Reagan's achievements.
"He was one of the greatest leaders of our generation. I believe he led to the cold war. The berlin wall fell because of his strength. we had a huge economic expansion during his presidency."
If the bill is passed, the statue will likely be similar to the one that stands in Washington, D.C., which cost about $40,000 to $50,000. But, Strickland explains, money for the new statue will not cost tax payers.
"As Ronald Reagan would want, all the donations are done privately, no state tax money, we'll raise all the money privately, which should not be a problem, there's love and affection toward president reagan, and I think it would be very easy to raise the money."
The bill must now pass through the legislature, and be signed by Governor Schwarzennegar. If or when that happens, Strickland would like to see the new sculpture complete for Reagan's 100th birthday next year.
