PASO ROBLES -- Parents in Paso Robles have organized a grassroots effort that's helping to put money back into classrooms in their school district.
"If the government can't do it, somebody has to do it," said Gwen Severson, a PREA member.
They call themselves the Paso Robles Education Alliance (PREA).
On Wednesday, they held the first ever "Feed Education" fundraiser with hopes of easing the burden of budget cuts in local schools.
"The school is the backbone of our community and anything I can do to help is where I have decided to put my energy," said Jeff Railsback, a PREA member.
The owner of Big Bubba's Bad BBQ, Tortilla Town and Good Ol' Burgers in Paso Robles is donating a portion of the entire day's profits to PREA.
"I figure it's the least I can do, just to come out and have a great burger and spend some time with friends," said Kevin Jaros, a customer and parent.
Thursday is the deadline for teachers to apply for grant money from PREA.
This fall, the group plans to give out 30 grants, worth $500 apiece.
"A lot of them have lost their jobs, but those that are still remaining are losing their funds for their classrooms, spend a lot of money out of their own pockets, just the basic supplies," said Severson. "It breaks my heart."
PREA held its first major fundraiser, a Halloween party, last fall.
Through that event and a membership drive, the organization has raised about $25,000.
