Getting to the Root of the 2012 Farm Bill

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- It's expected to be one of the most significant pieces of legislation debated in the coming year.

On Monday, Congresswoman Lois Capps held a roundtable discussion with members of the local agriculture industry at Cal Poly.

They told her the challenges they're facing on the farm and in the current economic climate.

It is a multi-billion dollar industry and on Monday, the people who keep the ag industry growing spoke their mind about farm and food policy.

Congress is expected to reauthorize the farm bill this year and in preparation for that Congresswoman Lois Capps met with some of the key players in Central Coast agriculture.

The meeting was held at Cal Poly's Dairy Products Technology Center.

University President Dr. Jeffrey Armstrong says it could have a big impact on the ag industry and the Central Coast economy.

"Our former students are the leaders of California agriculture," said Dr. Armstrong. "It impacts California in a tremendous way."

Growers and ranchers addressed immigration reform, as well as leveling the playing field for smaller farmers, allowing them to receive more federal support.

Pest prevention was also a hot topic.
