FRESNO - Fresno County is just a stones throw away from the Central Coast and officials there are blaming a water shortage for an increase in unemployment. In Mendota, 1 out of 3 people in the city are out of work. The city hit the worst unemployment spike in its history at nearly 35% for the month of December. That's way up from the national average of 7.2 percent recorded during the same month.

Eight miles up the road in Firebaugh, about 1 out of 4 people don't work, with the unemployment rate at nearly 23%.

Officials from both cities tie the unemployment to the lack of water in the fields. Many former workers are forced to lounge around the city without work. Others who have been layed off are moving up North to Orgeon and Washington to look for work.
