DOWN TO EARTH - A new non-profit store in downtown San Luis Obispo is making it easier to shop for Fair Trade products.

"It's been a long time coming," says store manager Sarah Leonard. "It would not be here if it were not for lots of people in the community."

The store sells only items that are produced in a wide range of developing countries, and where the workers are paid a living wage.

To be certified "fair trade," other concerns are taken into account too, like environmental and social standards.  For example, harmful chemicals are strictly prohibited in favor of environmentally sustainable farming methods.

"There's something for everyone here," Leonard boasts.

On top of helping the standards of those living in far away lands, Humankind also benefits the local area.

"Our store is a non-profit, which is pretty fantastic," Leonard says.  "Our profits will be going back into our community here in San Luis Obispo County and to children's organizations.  So, that's just another part of the store that makes it better."

Leonard says the store relies on the fair-trade certification seal to guarantee authenticity.
