From the flowers to the food and favors weddings can create a lot of waste...

"A typical wedding produces 400 to 600 pounds of waste, and there are two point five million weddings per year," says Event Planner, Merryl Brown.

Some Central Coast businesses are helping to combat that trend.

"Brides are really interested in being more conscientious with the planning of their wedding and more green, sustainable" explains Terra Basche of Terramalia designs. She uses potted plants, and combines them with other natural elements in her floral designs.

Brown carries the eco-friendly philosophy into all aspects of event planning. She specializes in green weddings.

"One of the biggest way to green your wedding is by inviting less people. More people equals more waste."

She also recommends you use local products, create a wedding website to help cut down on paper use, and consider buying a vintage dress or donating your gown after your big day.

"You figure it out in your own little way, whatever difference you can make in your corner of the world, make it."

And she says going eco-chic doesn't have to take away from the elegance of the event.

"When brides and grooms hear about this they say, I'm still going to have the wedding of my dreams, and do something good in the process.
