SANTA MARIA - Tater tots and chicken nuggets... brown school food that's making some see red!
Now, an incredible new program hopes to change what your kids eat for lunch. It's called s'Cool Food! and KCOY is thrilled to be part of the solution.
Lunch in most schools is fried, processed and packaged! It wasn't always this way. The government started feeding our children during the great depression.
In the 1980's, school populations exploded and school budgets couldn't keep up. Schools reflected the fast food culture. The food was cheap and our children are paying the price. One in every five children is now obese!
In 2007 ... Kinkos founder Paul Orfalea and his wife Natalie stepped in to help. They created the s'Cool Food Initiative. A ten year commitment to retrain food service workers in scratch cooking.
You can already see the gift on the tray. Healthy food now being served in some Central Coast schools. The s'Cool Food program is now working to empower schools in 17 school districts on the central coast from Goleta to Guadalupe.
Watch KCOY every Wednesday night at 5. Jennifer Mandulay will join us to serve up another special report in our s'Cool Food series.
