PASO ROBLES - It doesn't get any fresher than this.
A new Mobile Harvest Unit has come to the Central Coast and it's the first of its kind in the state.
The 28 foot long, generator powered trailer allows ranchers to have their cattle harvested on site, under USDA inspection.
The concept came to light ten years ago and San Luis Obispo County ranchers were interested, in order to avoid trucking their animals 150 miles to be harvested.
It's a boon for consumers and ranchers.
"In essence we recapture about 56% of the profit that would normally go out the door. So, we can sell direct, have reasonable prices. It makes small ranches functional again," says rancher Coco Collelmo.
The MHU is owned by a cooperative of 18 members.
