SANTA BARBARA - s'Cool Food to the rescue! The obesity rate in children is huge. It can lead to life threatening health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
Now, there's a new rescue vehicle on the Central Coast. The Mobile Cafe is delivering healthy school lunches and helping steer around the obstacles schools face in serving good food.
Schools in Santa Barbara County hit a road block when they didn't have a kitchen equipped to serve healthy food. No kitchen... No problem! The district put a mobile cafe in motion.
The Mobile Cafe can feed 250 students every 30 minutes.
The Mobile Cafe delivers healthy lunches to schools thanks to the s'Cool Food Initiative.. a program of the Orfalea foundations.
The idea really took off... now a fourth truck will soon join the fleet.
The s'Cool Food initiative also pays for Culinary Boot Camps. Food service workers learn the skills needed to cook real food. They also learn to steer around the perceived high cost of healthy food.
The Mobile Cafe can be rented for birthday parties and even weddings. In fact, the TV production crew at the recent Kim Kardashian wedding rented the Mobile Cafe to cater the lavish event in Montecito.
Watch s'Cool Food Reporter Jennifer Mandulay every Wednesday night for another special s'Cool Food report.
