SANTA MARIA - A Santa Maria business was evacuated this afternoon because of an ammonia leak.
The leak happened Wednesday morning in a cooler at the Pictsweet company on Hanson Way.
The company's emergency response team responded quickly, and was able to get the situation under control before fire crews arrived.
It is not clear how much ammonia actually escaped.
Battalion Chief, Scott Johnson with the Santa Maria Fire Department says, "It was a mechanical failure in one of the freezer units that malfunctioned and created the leak. Their response teams handled it very efficiently and quickly to eliminate it and isolate it at that time."
Crews spent the rest of the afternoon ventilating the building, no injuries were reported.
