CARPINTERIA - School gardens are sprouting up on the Central Coast, but there is one garden getting some very special attention. You won't believe what's growing on an old basketball court in Carpinteria. Bill Palmisano is truly outstanding in his field. He is the miracle grow. In two years time he turned the black concrete court into something really beautiful.
He created a one acre farm on the Carpinteria High School campus. It's now Bill's field of dreams.
Bill still finds pieces of the court under the cabbage, but he is proving if he can grow it here you can grow it anywhere!
This one acre feeds the student cafeteria and feeds the minds of students. It's a teaching tool for culinary arts and the art of marketing.
Students will soon sell fresh produce at a food stand.
Bill's one acre garden is cranking out thousands of pounds of food. The garden is producing so much food that they are now donating to the local food bank.
It's an outside classroom that might not of been possible in the current school budget squeeze without the s'Cool Food Initiative, a program of the Orfalea Foundations. The s'Cool Food Initiative broke ground to build the garden and pays to keep Bill on campus.
