SAN LUIS OBISPO - In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, families on the Central Coast are being called on to give back to the needy.
Americore and the San Luis Obispo County Food Back teamed up to ask for donations from 10,000 people.
Dr. King had a dream back in the 1960's.
Today, that legacy is alive through dozens of volunteers on the Central Coast.
"One of his famous quotes that we're going off of: Life's most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?" said Caroline Ginsberg of Americore and the SLO County Food Bank.
With bags in hand and a passion for giving, Americore volunteers teamed up to walk through neighborhoods throughout the county. asking them to lend a helping hand.
Cal Poly students said it was Dr. King's perseverance that inspired them.
"He made a difference. He's such an incredible individual he got out there and stood up for what he believed in and made a change," said Kathleen Palmer, volunteer.
"it's a huge part of our history," said Susan Wright, volunteer. "I think it's great that we can help out in any way that we can with these types of events as such an inspiration as he was."
In San Luis Obispo County alone, the food bank serves 40,000 needy families. 18,000 of that number is children.
"I know that number is really increasing with the kind of economic environment that we're in right now," Ginsberg said.
Volunteers will collect the bags on Monday and hope to provide 14,000 people with meals .
"Hunger doesn't stop. It doesn't take a break and this is a really essential time to get out there," Ginsberg said.
The SLO Food Bank serves more than 200 agencies.
