The Preschool Food Initiative is Born!

Posted: Updated:

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY - A big initiative is born for tiny tots!

The School Food Initiative has been working for four years to reform school lunch in elementary schools and now there is big news for pre-schoolers.  A new initiative made just for them.

The Preschool Food Initiative, through the Orfalea Foundation, is now working to reach kids even before elementary school. It will target children under age five.

The initiative is sponsoring the first ever preschool culinary training with eight Chefs from Santa Barbara County child care centers.

Training to educate and inspire!

"We've learned that more than a third of all pre-schoolers in Santa Barbara County are already overweight", says Adrianna Foss with the Orfalea Foundation Preschool Food Initiative.

"This means these kids are at risk for heart disease, diabetes and a lifetime of being overweight", says Eric Nelson, The Director Preschool Food Initiative.

The Preschool Initiative is hoping to have the biggest impact on the smallest bodies.

Recipes made from scratch for tiny tummies, cut smaller, served softer, so that it's safer to avoid the risk of choking.

Starting young to tip the scales in their favor.

Preschool Food Service Chefs graduate from this special training with a higher knowledge in scratch cooking for kids.
