SANTA BARBARA - It's a jungle out there and that's a good thing!
The School Food Initiative is having huge success reforming school lunch on the Central Coast and now they are working to improve the classroom.
How do you make school better especially in pre-school? You move school outdoors.
The new outdoor classrooms are quite an adventure and enthusiasm is growing over the Outdoor Classroom Project!
"Anything you can do indoors learning wise you can do outdoors", says Bill Cirone, the Santa Barbara School Superintendent of 29 years.
At the Leap Center children are autistic and learning outside is less of a struggle. Teachers say language, speech and student behaviors are better.
85 percent of all Pre-Schools in Santa Barbara County are getting back to nature thanks to the Orfalea Foundation.
"It's really a framework and a philosophy of how to approach and create outdoor time for children", says Adrianna Foss from the Orfalea Foundation.
So, what does this have to do with school food?
Our cameras captured a little girl sampling parsley and chives fresh from the school garden.
"The School Food Initiative has created a revolution, I can't say enough about the vision and leadership of the Orfalea Foundation", says Cirone.
