Identity Of Officer Who Fired Deadly Shot Revealed

SANTA MARIA - Central Coast News has learned from multiple sources Santa Maria Police officer Matthew Kline is the officer who fired the deadly shot on Saturday morning that killed 29-year-old Albert Covarrubias Jr. 

According to police, Covarrubias was the subject of an internal criminal investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct against a 17-year-old girl. 

The shootout happened around 1:19 a.m. near McElhaney and Broadway when Santa Maria Police officers attempted to arrest Covarrubias while he was on duty when gunfire was exchanged.

Santa Maria Police said Covarrubias pulled out a gun and shot at them when they tried to arrest him.

Kline responded by shooting Covarrubias once in the chest.

Covarrubias was rushed to Marian Medical Center for emergency surgery and later pronounced dead from his injuries.
