SAN LUIS OBISPO - The City of San Luis Obispo has reached a new contract agreement with city firefighters.
The four-year contract will save the city more than $1.7 million, starting in July.
The fire union will pay 7.5% of the member contribution to Calpers.
Calpers is the state's pension fund.
The city anticipates taking the agreement to the city council in open session, next month.
"This is really a step in the right direction," says Katie Lichtig, San Luis Obispo City Manager. "We've laid out this path almost two years ago in terms of financial sustainability and how we are going to be working with our employee groups to obtain that, and so this is a great success along that pathway."
San Luis Obispo firefighters say while it's a sacrifice for them, they are happy it will help improve overall safety levels in the city.
