A Vote In November Whether Illegal Immigrants Should Pay Income Taxes

Posted: Updated:

Sacramento - In another effort to balance the state budget... you'll vote in November whether illegal immigrants should pay income taxes.

The measure would create a five-year program to encourage undocumented workers to pay state income taxes.

First... the Governor would have to get assurances from the federal government it will not arrest or deport people who take part in the program.

Democratic Rep. Mike Davis says, "I think taxes are fair to everyone. I believe that we should make provisions available to everyone; and that everyone should have an equal opportunity to contribute into our economy through taxing."

Information gathered on illegal immigrants and their employers would be confidential.

The Legislative Analyst and the Department of Finance do not see this as a big windfall for the state budget.
