Students Helping To Upgrade Veteran's Home

Posted: Updated:

ARROYO GRANDE - Some Cal Poly students are going to work for a veteran.

The engineering students are involved in the Veterans Home Energy Upgrade Project.

With the help of some local contractors, they'll upgrade a veteran's home to make it more energy efficient.

The students are planning the project from start to finish, and all the materials and labor are donated.

They will identify and correct problems with the home that are relatively inexpensive to fix.

"Really, you can do the first 20% increase in efficiency with a few thousand dollars, $5,000 or $6,000, and that's really a better payoff than putting solar panels on your roof," says Bruce Severance, project coordinator. "It's what you should do before you put solar panels on your roof."

"It's meaningful and we really did want to put our efforts into something that was beneficial for the community," said Sean Mitchell, engineering student.

The students will do the first test on the home in Arroyo Grande on Saturday, to assess how to make it more energy efficient.

The group is getting support from the Kiwanis Club of San Luis Obispo.
