Vandals Wreak Havoc on Vehicles in Nipomo

Posted: Updated:

NIPOMO -- Authorities are on the lookout for vandals who committed a string of vandalism cases targeting cars and trucks in Nipomo.

Investigators say the vandals are going after easy targets: cars and trucks that are left unlocked and on the street.

"That's really scary," said Alicia Gibson, a Nipomo resident. "It really makes me want to move my vehicles inside."

On Monday morning, a scorched car seat sat on a front lawn in Nipomo.

It is evidence of the damage vandals have down in the neighborhood.

Alicia Gibson's neighbors discovered Sunday morning that someone set their car on fire.

They live on Division Street.

One block over on Allegre Avenue, another car was torched.

"They were definitely intentionally set," said Cal Fire Captain Jane Schmitz.

Investigators won't say how the fires were started, but in both cases they were started from the inside of the cars.

The flames were put out before the vehicles were destroyed.

"Both cars are damaged with smoke damage and the layers of the creosote and all the different other things that are coming to the fire itself," said Schmitz.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is investigating other acts of vandalism in the neighborhood.

In each case, the victim left his or her car unlocked.
