SANTA MARIA - Residents of a Santa Maria neighborhood are urging the city's Planning Commission to vote against a new recycling yard.
The recycling center is proposed for a site at the corner of Fesler and Depot Streets in Santa Maria.
People who live in the area are worried about the effects the yard could have on their health.
"You know, maybe if the facility was going on the outskirts of town, people would feel different about it," said Terri Zuniga, a neighbor and candidate for City Council. "It's not the appropriate facility right in the middle of the neighborhood, and my guess would be that any of the planning commissioners would not want it in their backyard."
City officials have said plans for the recycling center have been reviewed and they believe the facility is appropriate for the area.
The planning commission is expected to vote on the matter on Wednesday.
