SM Planning Commission To Discuss Area 9

Posted: Updated:

SANTA MARIA - The Santa Maria Planning Commission will discuss the development of Area 9 at its next meeting on Wednesday, February 15th.

A huge business complex is planned for the 890 acre site. It would accommodate professional, and industrial uses including oil production, and research and development uses.

Planning for the project has spanned the past 6 years and is nearing the final couple of hurdles it needs to clear for approval. "The staff recommendation to the planning commission is they recommend approval to city council of the specific and all the components to enable to move the specific plan forward," says Frank Albro, City of Santa Maria Planner II.

Peggy Woods, who is the Santa Maria Planning Division Manager says if the project does receive final approval, it will still be at least a couple of years before businesses can open. "The infrastructure needs to be set in place and installed. Roads, utilities need to be placed to accommodate the development."

Area 9 was annexed by Santa Maria in 2004 and is located on the western border. It is situated with Betteravia Road to the south, Black Road to the west, A Street to the east and the railroad tracks to the north.

The Santa Maria Planning Commission will meet in city council chambers on Wednesday, February 15, 2011 beginning at 6:30pm.
