Off Duty Deputy Works A Little Overtime to Help Catch a Crook

GROVER BEACH, Calif. -  An off Duty Sheriff's Deputy and Grover Beach Police make an arrest of 21 year old Mathew Ortega after a report of someone tampering with parked vehicles.

According to the police news release,  at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning Grover Beach Police Officers responded to the area of Oak Park Blvd and The Pike to assist an off-duty Sheriff's Deputy who reported a suspicious person tampering with parked vehicles in the area.

Officers were able to contact the suspect, identified as Matthew J. Ortega, 21 of Oceano, inside a vehicle that did not belong to him and take him into custody. During the subsequent investigation, Officers determined the suspect was responsible for breaking into numerous vehicles in the Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach and Oceano areas during the overnight hours.

Grover Beach Police Officers have recovered some stolen property and the Detective Bureau is conducting further follow up investigations in conjunction with other local law enforcement agencies to identify additional victims. The Grover Beach Police Department is asking all witnesses and any potential victims of a recent vehicle burglary to contact Detective Michael Hollis at (805) 473-4570.
