Two Big Projects Before Planning Commission

Posted: Updated:

SANTA MARIA - Two big projects went before the Santa Maria Planning Commission Wednesday night, but it only took action on one of them.

The commission put off discussion of a controversial recycling center, proposed for the corner of Fesler and Depot Streets, until the next meeting on March 21st.

Neighbors are concerned about the effects it could have on traffic in the area and on their health.

City officials have said plans for the recycling center have been reviewed and they believe the facility is appropriate for the area.

Meanwhile, the Planning Commission recommended approval of the Area 9 development.

Area 9 is made up of 900 acres, just west of Santa Maria.

The city says it's envisioned to be a manufacturing, industrial and commercial area, and would bring in jobs and tax revenue.

The Santa Maria City Council will now take up the project at its meeting on March 20th.
