Group Files Petition to Expand Evacuation Zones Near Diablo

Posted: Updated:

San Luis Obispo - A local group is taking part in a national campaign... urging new safety rules concerning... nuclear power plants.

It's nearly been one year since the disaster in Fukushima, Japan.

In the wake of that, 37 groups from around the United States came together Wednesday to file a petition with the federal government.

Groups like San Luis Obispo Mothers For Peace are hoping to expand evacuation zones from 25 to 50 miles.

At Diablo Canyon...  PG and E says planning there already exceeds industry standards.

PG&E spokesperson, Tom Cuddy says, "Diablo Canyon's emergency planning zone is twice the size that is required by federal law..."

If new evacuation zones were implemented.... it would affect millions of people.

According to the petition... one-third of all people in the US... live within 50 miles of a nuclear power plant.
