Morro Bay Considers Expanding No Smoking Limits

Posted: Updated:

Morro Bay  -- One central coast city is considering a ban on smoking.

The Morro Bay City Council is looking at expanding its current smoking limits.

The council discussed several options for a new ordinance last week.

Right now smoking is prohibited around play structures in public parks and at the beach.

The city is considering no smoking on sidewalks, in outdoor dining areas at bars and restaurants, public events like farmers markets and fairs, and recreation areas such as trails and sports fields.

City Council Member Carla Borchard says, "We are looking at secondhand smoke in the indoor and outdoor areas and also in regards to the litter for our estuary and other things."

The City Council will consider expanding its restrictions on smoking at its meeting March 20th and will eventually seek public input on any proposal.

More than a dozen California Cities have smoking bans that go beyond state laws, including San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Goleta.
