A Fresh Idea! Farmer Direct

Posted: Updated:

SANTA BARBARA - A special delivery for Central Coast schools! One man's fresh idea gives a healthy boost to students and farmers.

Wesley Sleight is a local man with the great idea and a truck.  It called Farmer Direct!

50 farmers who used to sell only at farmers markets are now selling to large institutions like hospitals and restaurants.

Sleight calls the farmers multiple times a week to stay on top of what's in season.  He puts the information on one consolidated price sheet and sends it out to big buyers.

Small family owned farms like Lane Farms are on the list. They've been around since 1868, but are enjoying new help to cultivate business.

"This opens a huge new venue for farmers who were just selling to individual consumers and now they can sell to thousands of mouths at once," says Sleight.

Farmer Direct was created with children in mind to make sure they have access to all the good food grown locally.

Today he delivers to San Marcos High School.  Before Farmer Direct, school food wasn't always fresh.

Like the bees on the farm spreading the pollen around, Farmer Direct helps spread farm fresh food around.

Farmer Direct is helping farmers grow and helping students grow!
