Playing Hot Potato in Goleta

Posted: Updated:

GOLETA - The luck of the Irish is spreading through Central Coast schools.  School Chefs create a potato bar to celebrate St. Patrick's day with a rainbow of fresh toppings.

The potassium, fiber filled potatoes become a vessel for more vegetables.

The Food Service Director in Goleta says whenever students have a choice, even if its only one or the other, kids will eat more!  Students love all the fresh toppings.

Students in Goleta are eating real whole food thanks to the School Food Initiative through the Orfalea Foundation.

It's helping local schools get back to scratch cooking! Teaching schools how to make healthy food fun! Today's lesson is a game of hot potato and everyone wins!

"It really, really, really was better than any potato I have ever tasted," says one Goleta student named Sienna.

"It's lucky for everyone that we have such support from the Orfalea Foundation and we are able to build this great food program for our students," says Sharon Baird from the Goleta Union School District.

In fact, the district is saving money by not buying processed food and they've turned around and put that into the fresh fruits and vegetables on the daily salad bar.

Turning good food into gold!  When fresh choices rolled into schools lunch sales went up 10 percent!
