Storm Causes Roadway Flooding

Posted: Updated:

SANTA MARIA, Calif.- If you've been on the road, the windy weather and slippery road conditions sure aren't making it any easier for drivers on the roadway.

"We ran over a couple tree branches, little ones, here and there," says Joe Steed, a Santa Maria driver.

When weather like this hits, many people don't have the option of staying in doors. They still have to get behind the wheel whether they think it's unsafe or not.

"We do see an increase of traffic accidents during inclement weather like this and it's usually the result in people driving too fast," says Sergeant Jesus Valle, Santa Maria Police Department.

"In this town there seems to be a lot of people who don't pay attention and you see them coming out of the intersections without stopping and slowing down, definitely pays to be a defensive driver," says Steed.

"We just urge people to drive safely, don't be distracted when you're driving, take the extra time to get to your destination," says Valle.

Officers also say when it starts to rain the first few minutes are the most dangerous for drivers because the oil and grease on the road starts to spread causing conditions to be very slippery.
