SANTA MARIA - Good news for college graduates this year. A new survey finds employers will hire more graduates this year than last.
Employers plan to hire nine and a half percent more grads this year than last. But, seniors are urged to begin their job search long before graduation.
Nationwide, hiring of college graduates plummeted in 2009 by twenty two percent. There was a small recovery in 2010.
At Cal Poly, sixty five percent of graduates were employed full time and seventeen percent went on to go to graduate school.
That may seem like it's not that bad but compared to 2006 its still way down. Seventy four percent of grads got full time employment after leaving school six years ago.
The recent report said, hiring projections indicate positive movement across the board. The strongest demand is for business, engineering and computer science majors.
Unemployment among college graduates up to age twenty four dropped from nine point eight percent in February 2011 to eight point one last month. But, that is well above the four point six percent in 2008.
February's unemployment rate for the same ages with just a high school diploma was twenty two and a half percent.
