Early Morning Accident in Santa Maria Sends Two Kids to the Hospital

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Early this Monday morning at the intersection of Donovan and Railroad Ave a car ran into two children, sending them both to the hospital. Both were crossing in the crosswalk when they were struck.

According to Santa Maria Police, around 7:46am officers from the Santa Maria Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Donovan and Railroad Ave. in response to a vehicle vs. two pedestrian traffic collision.  The investigation revealed the following;

Leopoldo Reyes Tapia, a 46 year old Santa Maria resident was east bound on W. Donovan Rd. driving a green Saturn sedan.  He passed through the intersection of Donovan Rd. and Railroad Ave. and struck two juvenile pedestrians, who were crossing Donovan Rd.  The Juveniles, one 14 year old male and a 12 year old female were crossing W. Donovan Rd. north bound, on the east side of the intersection.  The pedestrians were within the crosswalk when they were struck.

Both pedestrians were taken to Marian Medical Center by AMR Ambulance.  The 14 year old male suffered from a broken left femur and the 12 year old female suffered from a fractured left orbital socket, fracture of the pelvis and a fractured right knee.  The driver of the Saturn did not sustain any injury.  At the time of this news release, both pedestrians were listed in stable condition and were being treated by hospital staff.

At the time of the collision, Tapia was the sole occupant of the Saturn. He was operating his motor vehicle on a valid California Drivers License. Alcohol does NOT seem to be a factor in this collision.
