Breakfast in the Classroom

Posted: Updated:

SANTA BARBARA - Breakfast is the best meal of the day and served in class it may be even better!

The School Food Initiative is making sure Central Coast students get a healthy school lunch and now they are working to promote breakfast.

200 students at La Cumbre Junior High eat a made from scratch breakfast everyday.

A breakfast delivered right to their desks.

"It's really really amazing... I love it! Too amazing for words!", says student Nathan Gibbings.

Amazing because it's also free to all students. Due to the number of low income children at the school the government pays!

This is the 'only' school in Santa Barbara County serving breakfast in the classroom to make sure no one skips and they serve a lot!

Last year, they served more than 50 thousand breakfasts during the school year.

Some educators fear food in class will be a messy distraction. At La Cumbre Junior High breakfast brings many benefits.

Principal Jo Ann Caines says student achievement is up! They also see better test scores, better behavior and better attitudes about learning and school.

Fewer students are staying home sick and nurse visits dropped as breakfast increased.

According to the Food Service Director in Santa Barbara, if all elementary schools served breakfast in the classroom the district would see a net profit of more than 500 thousand dollars!

This comes from government reimbursements currently not being captured.
