SOLEDAD, Calif.- New information on the fight to keep cell phones out of state prisons.
Monday, the California Department of Corrections announced a new plan to crack down on cell phone use by inmates, without costing you a dime.
It's called Managed Access and it creates a cellular umbrella over a specified area, blocking unauthorized any sort of cell phone communication around that prison.
Central Coast News told you just how prevelant cell phones are in prisons. Inmates use the smuggled phones to communicate with the outside world, giving orders to committ crimes, conduct gang business, and even contact victims families.
Under this new system, the prison staff will have control over which phone numbers will still be operational within the cell network. Other than that all calls, text messages, or internet activity on a phone will be blocked.
The technology has already been tested at two facilities and Dept of Corrections hopes to start the roll out in prisons by October.
