SALINAS, Calif. -- The day following Capital One's purchase of the HSBC Salinas site, over 800 employees have been told they will lose their jobs by 2013.

This comes the same day as Capital One has opened a new credit card facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Capital One said in a statement to Central Coast News:

"Capital One leaders have made the difficult business decision to close the Salinas site by the middle of 2013 as part of an overall plan that best meets the long-term goals of our company and serves the needs of our customers. Some of the work will begin exiting sooner and the timing will vary by department...This is a very tough decision, and we will work closely with the community and our impacted associates to offer the following services throughout this transition period "

South Dakota's governor and congressional delegation has held a ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome a Capital One Financial Corp. credit card contact center in Sioux Falls.

Capital One in August announced the acquisition of the U.S. credit card arm of Britain's HSBC for $2.6 billion. Capital One said it would add 400 jobs in Sioux Falls as part of the acquisition.
