MORRO BAY, Calif- It's a site to see, a 30-year-old that has been a part of a lot of history. It was brought here to the Central Coast to share its history in a museum in the works.
This submarine was used as a training vessel for marines all over the world, including Japan, Australia, England and NATO countries. These two vessels are on display on the waterfront of Morro Bay as part of an effort that began in the early 90's to build a Morro Bay Maritime Museum.
Larry Newland, President of the Central Coast Maritime Museum Association says, "the building will be about approximately where the coast guard boat is right now and eventually the museum will consist of a 15-hundred square foot building surrounded by static small boat display including the submarine and various interpretive exhibits inside the building"
The other vessels are currently in storage as they go through some rehab before they're put on display to the public. This is stage one in bringing the Morro Bay Maritime Museum to life. Newland says they're hoping to break ground in the next 2 to 3 years.
