San Luis Obispo -- The San Luis Obispo County Republican Party provided new documents to the County Clerk Recorders Office. The RPSLO turned over photocopies of 965 voter registrations that were turned in late. The documents have now been turned over to the Secretary Of State for investigation.
Chairman of the Republican Party San Luis Obispo County, John Peschong says, "It is a sacred right that people have to be able to vote and participate in their democracy and it is upsetting when that right is trampled upon."
The photocopies of the voter registration forms, most collected on the Cal Poly campus, were dropped off at the Republican Party office in San Luis Obispo.
The forms were turned in past the 72 hours allowed by law and past the May 21st deadline to register to vote. Some of them were 3 to 4 weeks old.
SLO County Clerk Recorder Julie Rodewold says it is an obvious disregard for the law.
It is common for organizations to get paid for gathering voter registrations and signatures on petitions. The group that collected these forms is thought to be from the Central Valley and is not affiliated with the Republican Party.
Whether it was a mistake or a deliberate attempt to keep people from voting Rodewold says it's illegal.
All the voter registration forms were for republican voters. Those voters did have an option if they went to the polls to vote a provisional ballot. The special ballots are still being counted, so it's unknown at this time if any of the 965 did try to vote in the primary. They will be able to vote in November. If you have any questions about your voter registration status check with the County Clerk Recorder's office either by phone or online.
