Man Found Dead Near Gaviota Was A Military Veteran

Posted: Updated:

SANTA BARBARA – The man, whose body was identified as Jeffrey Nancarrow of Santa Barbara, was a military veteran who served the country overseas.

The last time anyone saw 29-year-old Nancarrow was the evening of May 23. He sent a message to members of his family that caused them some concern.

The family called the Santa Barbara Police Department and said Nancarrow, who served in the Army, might try to hurt himself.

"Mr. Nancarrow was characterized to us as an Iraq War veteran who was suffering from post-traumatic stress and other issues and he was possibly delusional and suicidal," said Sgt. Riley Harwood, Santa Barbara Police Department.

Police officers and members of the crisis negotiation response team went to his apartment on the 900 block of Miramonte Drive in Santa Barbara. They spent hours in the area and finally went in the apartment but he wasn't there.

The police department and the family made a missing persons report and detectives were actively looking for the soldier.

This past Saturday, the 29-year-old's body was found by three fishermen on a beach in Gaviota known as Poison Oak Point.

"It is truly a tragedy," said Sgt. Harwood. "We were hoping to be able to find Mr. Nancarrow and assist him and his family in getting him the services that he needed."

Nancarrow leaves behind a mother, father, a brother who served with him overseas and a wife and daughter.

It will take several weeks until the cause of death is determined.
