SANTA MARIA, Calif.- Central Coast News is learning new information about what the Covarrubias family has to say about the man they say shot and killed their son, Albert Covarrubias Junior.
The family is taking the first step at filing what could be a multi-million dollar lawsuit. The Covarrubias family has filed a tort claim against the City of Santa Maria and the man they say shot and killed their son, Officer Matt Kline.
The claim is for damages and could reach into the millions.
At the heart of the claim, the family contends Officer Kline shot and killed Albert Covarrubius Junior while both were on duty. The five page document goes on to allege false criminal report by a peace officer, unlawful arrest by a peace officer and destroying evidence among other claims.
Central Coast News spoke with the Covarrubias' family attorney who issued the following statement: "We feel that the investigation was conducted with a pre-determined outcome clearing the city and its officials of any wrong doing. The attempt to protect officials at the highest levels of the police department is blatant and unacceptable," says Attorney Gil Alvandi.
