NIPOMO, Calif. - A Nipomo man is being treated at a burn center in Los Angeles after fire crews say he tried to save his home after it went up in flames Thursday morning.
Fire crews were called to the home in the 200 block of East Knotts Avenue at about 2:45 Thursday morning. Firefighters arrived within minutes and reported light smoke coming from inside the house. Upon arriving the female resident had already escaped the burning home. According to Cal Fire, two neighbors were inside the house helping rescue the man. Firefighters immediately took over and removed the man from the burning home.
Central Coast News spoke to the neighbors who actually went inside to rescue the man and said because there was so much smoke, they were only able to find the man because he had passed out and was snoring.
Cal Fire says the smoke alarm was working at the time and remind people if a fire happens, do not try to put it out yourself.
Damages to the home are estimated to be approximately $100,000 with a savings of house and its contents estimated at $300,000 The American Red Cross has been called to assist with any temporary housing needs for the family.
