Boondocking Society

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif-Using your car for a home seems to be increasing in certain areas. Now there is a term for it, "boondocking." Basically, there is a society of boondockers who talk about where and when to park your home. "I have heard at Walmart, except that many of them around here don't allow people to, what you call boondocking, in their parking lots," says Mike Plisky, a community member of SLO.

I did a quick Google search and you won't believe what is out there. There's even a music video and it goes like this, "I'm living at a Walmart, America's free campground."

That's what boondocking is living in your car, in basically the parking lot of your choosing. Apparently it's somewhat of an art and there's plenty of lists of where to sleep on the road. Cities like San Luis Obispo say boondockers just took over. "For us the problem almost happened over night," says Dee Torres, a Homeless Advocate.

Like Prado Road, sometimes lined with homes on wheels. According to these web sites there are tricks of the trade. "They are talking and they do kind of work together of where a good place might be," says Torres.

One site has "stealth parking tips." For example keep your vehicle clean and presentable so no one can tell you're living off the grid. This trend, Torres says is increasing in San Luis Obispo.
