LOS ALAMOS, Calif. - Just before 4pm Sunday evening, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Deputies responded to reports of a shooting just about 4 miles north of Los Alamos.

As a CHP Officer arrived on scene with back up from Sheriffs Deputies and the suspect immediately got out of his car and confronted the CHP Officer.

Lieutenant Eric Raney, Santa Barbara County Sheriff' said, "At some point during that confrontation the highway patrol felt his life was in jeopardy as well as the female victim in the car, shots were fired several times."

That's when a flight crew came out and transported the suspect on Life Flight to Cottage Hospital. As for the Santa Maria CHP Officer involved, Mike Mallory of the CHP Office said, "This is a veteran he's been through a lot he's seen a lot this is something the suspect dictated to him. It's been some time since Santa Maria has had an officer involved shooting I believe 15-20 years."

Still no word on the suspect's condition and it's unclear exactly how many shots were fired, but no law enforcement officers were injured.  The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation into the shooting.
