SANTA MARIA, Calif.- According to California Highway Patrol, congressional candidate Abel Maldonado's wife was driving a 2008 Cadillac Escalade east of Santa Maria Monday afternoon, when she was struck by a car, killing the driver.
CHP says a 30-year-old man driving a 1985 Honda Accord ran a stop sign and was killed. It happened at the intersection of Foxen Canyon and Dominion Roads just after 4:00pm Monday afternoon.
Laura Maldonado, 44, and her teenage son suffered minor injuries and were treated and released for minor injuries at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria. Both cars ended up in an irrigation canal on the north side of Foxen Canyon Road.
Abel Maldonado issued the following statement regarding a traffic accident:
"Monday afternoon, my wife Laura and son were in a terrible car accident in Santa Maria. Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family of the victim. There are no words that can lift the burden of grief and sorrow his family and friends are experiencing right now.
"My wife and son were taken to a local hospital in Santa Maria and underwent precautionary tests and were released Monday evening and returned home. Again, the thoughts and prayers of our entire family are with his family and friends."
