Former Santa Maria Police Explorer Files Lawsuit Against City in Covarrubias Case

Posted: Updated:

SANTA MARIA, Calif.- A former Santa Maria Police Explorer who was allegedly involved in a sexual relationship with Officer Albert Covarrubias Jr. has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Santa Maria, claiming the city police department failed to protect her.

The 19-page lawsuit was filed Thursday accusing the police department of not doing anything to protect the girl, Jane Doe.

This lawsuit comes months after Doe's attorney, Terry Goldberg filed a claim for damages. Back in March, the Goldberg claims she resisted the alleged sexual advances of Covarrubias and was taken advantage of.  It said police did nothing about it, until the department decided to arrest Covarrubias on January 28th.

Here is what the City Attorney's Office can state about this lawsuit:

"We have not completed our review of the complaint, and we have not been served. In any case, we are unlikely to have any significant comment to make concerning the allegations in the lawsuit until after substantial discovery has been completed in the case, which could take several months."

    Assistant City Attorney
