Cal Fire Assists Wildfires Burning Across the State

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif-  As wildfires continue to burn across the state, crews here at home are doing their part to help. Cal Fire has already sent engines, bull dozers and hand crews to battle the blazes.

"Currently we've met maximum drawn down, we've sent out everything we're going to send out. Five engines are split up, five of them are on the fire in San Diego and then local agencies we sent up the wildfire in Lake County yesterday," says Assistant Fire Chief Eric Cleveland, Cal Fire.

Typically when crews are sent out they will switch shifts every 14 days.

"Under these extreme conditions the director is looking to extend that to a 21-day commitment for all personnel on duty," says Cleveland.

Firefighter, Richard Avina says it was just two weeks ago he was sent out to a fire in northern California, "went out there to a 60-acre fire to assist the fire, it was a pretty rugged area and a big drainage that had a lot of potential, but we kept it from spreading any further."

Even stretch thin, Cal Fire says if a fire were to happen locally they are fully staffed and have enough resources to respond.

Cal Fire also says when temperatures peak up to 90 to 100 degrees is when they typically don't see a lot of fires burning because they say more people are opt to stay indoors.
