Group Files Lawsuit Against City of Atascadero

Posted: Updated:
ATASCADERO, Calif. - A group has filed lawsuit against the city of Atascadero opposing the development of a new Walmart store.

The 129,000 square foot store is expected to be built at the intersection of El Camino Real and Del Rio Rd.

"It would be a boom for Atascadero," says Mayor Bob Kelley.

The group called "Save Atascadero", headed by spokesperson Tom Comar, says the Walmart may negatively impact the surrounding environment and local economy.

The Walmart is expected to bring 300 jobs and at least 100 to 150 jobs in construction alone, said Mayor Kelley.

The Walmart was expected to open by 2014 but for now plans are at a standstill.

"We need to get past this lawsuit and hopefully get it expedited," said Kelley. "But the judicial system is not the fastest moving thing."
