Size alone makes it very dangerous to go one on one with a whale out in the ocean, but a federal law also makes it illegal. However, that is not stopping people from documenting the amazing site. According to NOAA if you find yourself in a whale situation that you can not avoid do NOT do any of the following:

Move into the path of a whale

Move faster than a whale

Make erratic speed or directional changes, unless to avoid collision with a whale.

Get between two whales

Chase any whales

Feed any whales
The whale craze started when a bird photographer Bill Bouton took these pictures after a disappointing day of bird photography. As websites all over the world linked to these pictures, more people started snapping their own pictures.
