Police Train for Active Shooter Situations at Cal Poly

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- Serious measures are taken to combat a serious issue: violence on campus. Cal Poly Police and Cuesta College Police trained on Cal Poly Campus for an active shooter situation.

Every second counts for campus police officers. "We have to act now, act immediately, and put a stop to the situation as soon as possible," said Sgt. Larry Ponting. These training's are nothing short of realistic, in one simulation, police are after an angry student that's taken two hostages. Cal Poly Police say unfortunately these kind of situations aren't uncommon. "You just never know what might trigger someone to do this, we do our best to be ready as we possibly can for that situation, should it occur."

Often times, it is a single officer responding to a scene and in active shooter situations, you can't allow time to pass for a swat response. "9 times of 10 its going to be a single or at least maybe a two man response," said Sgt. Ponting.

Campus police are mandated by the university to have this kind of training each year, both Cal Poly and Cuesta Police were training Thursday.
